Lab Details of Dr. Achuthan C. Raghavamenon
Laboratory for Metabolic and Degenerative Diseases
Focus of lab
- Biomedical approach to validate traditional and plant-based interventions, bridging Ayurvedic knowledge with modern biochemical and pharmacological aspects
- Uncovering mechanisms by which dietary oils and herbal extracts modulate oxidative stress, cholesterol metabolism, inflammation, and tumor development and metastasis
- Develop dietary model for advanced fatty liver disease and hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) and understand the role of mitochondrial adaptation in neoplastic development
- Study the progressive changes associated with chemoresistance and metastatic acquisition by non-metastatic cancer cells and discover the potential of natural products in chemo-sensitization.
- Developing a safe herbal formulation for the effective management of Atherosclerosis
Achievements
- Developed and in-house Anti-atherosclerotic polyherbal formulation and established its complementing action with Atorvastatin
- Reverse cholesterol pathway enhancing efficacy of Desmodium gyrans documented
- Identified differetnt herbal components with anti- cancer activity
- Demonstrated virgin coconut oil’s (VCO) ability to reduce hepatic steatosis, restore redox balance, and provide hepatoprotection in animal models
- Investigations revealed that thermally oxidized cooking oils dysregulate carbohydrate and lipid metabolism and disrupt hepatic redox homeostasis and accelerate lipid-related liver damage in rats,
- A short term dietary model for advanced NASH was developed and using this model exacerbated fatty liver disease progression in diabetic rats under chronic alcoholism has been documented.
- PGC 1 alfa/P53 axis mediated mitochondrial adaptation has been identified as the mechanistic basis for exacerbated NASH especially in female rats.
